La vorágine (The Vortex) (1924) is a naturalist novel by José Eustasio Rivera that recounts the adventure of Arturo Cova, who escapes in an amazing flight in the Eastern Plains, an extensive region of mighty rivers, where he loses Alicia, his lover. The desire to recover Alicia takes him to the Colombian Amazon where Arturo becomes exposed to the slavery of rubber workers. His trip is a descent to a particular hell. The protagonists of La vorágine is the jungle, its rituals and the struggle for survival.
