The First Martyrs of Japan
Similar to a political play, Los primeros mártires de Japón (The First Martyrs of Japan) by Lope de Vega speculates on the conversion of the Japanese shogun to Christianity. Along with the evangelization of the text – the martyrs die in the name of Christ – there is a portrait of the palatial intrigues of the Shogun court and, as a background, the style of Spanish colonialism, founded, among other things, on the transmission of Christianity.
