The Cántico espiritual (Spiritual Canticle) presents the topic of love between God and God’s devotees and the concept of marriage with divinity as a metaphor for Christian fellowship. This is a reference work in the Spanish reform movement.

San Juan de la Cruz was a leading reformer of the Carmelite order, founded by St. Teresa’s Order of Discalced Carmelites. This work earned him the condemnation of the Church and imprisonment on two occasions. More remarkable than his reform work is his writing, which includes his three older poems, Noche oscura, Cántico espiritual y Llama de amor viva, and Los comentarios en prosa sobre su poesía, collected almost entirely in a volume entitled Obras espirituales que encaminan a un alma a la unión perfecta con Dios.
