Spain, Take This Cup Away from Me

España, aparta de mí este cáliz (Spain, Take This Cup Away from Me) is poetry written by César Vallejo in the last months of 1937. It was published after his death in 1939. Written at the same time as Human Poems, Vallejo conceived it as a separate book, inspired by the Spanish Civil War.
España, aparta de mí este cáliz, appeared in Spain, printed by the Republican soldiers of the Eastern Army in the Abbey of Montserrat. The legend says that the necessary paper for the edition was made with the uniform of a Franco general killed in combat, but this is most likely false.
The prince edition was gone for decades. However, in 1983 four copies were found in the library of the Monastery of Montserrat itself. This edition was prepared by Manuel Altolaguirre, in the Literary Editions of the Commissariat of the Eastern Army.
Spain, apart from me this chalice was included later in posthumous poetry, by Georgette Vallejo, the widow of the poet, with the title of Human Poems (Paris, Les Editions des Presses Modernes au Palais Royal, 1939). In this edition, the order of the poems and the numbering is different from that of the first edition of January 1939.
In 1940 Juan Larrea published and prefaced another edition in Mexico, with the subtitle of Prophecy of America. This is very similar to the principle edition.
The title of España, aparta de mí este cáliz, is inspired by a passage from the Gospels, in which Christ addresses God, saying: «Father, if possible, take this cup away from me». The book has a strong biblical breath, and more than epic poetry is a secular prayer in favor of Spanish Republicans.
