Poems of Nezahualcóyotl

There are only thirty-four poems of Nezahualcóyotl that can be attributed to him with certainty: 10 are in Cantares Mexicanos and 24 in Romances de los señores de Nueva España (Ballads of the Lords of New Spain). He is also credited with several poems collected in Chichimeca History translated by Alva Ixtlilxóchitl.
A great-grandson of Nezahualcoyotl, Juan Bautista Pomar (mestizo perhaps and originally from Texcoco), wrote his Texcoco Relation to inform King Felipe II of the state and history of their territories. Pomar finished his book in March 1582-a very valuable exposition of the «historical and cultural environment» of this ancient manor-and added a chapter he called Romances de los señores de Nueva España. It is a compilation of ancient poems nahualts. It is said that it was Fray Bernardino de Sahagún who commissioned this document. The manuscript has 42 folios, with 60 poems grouped by their areas of origin: Texcoco, Chalco, Huexotzinco, Triple Alianza.
Beyond the polemics about which poems can be attributed to Nezahualcóyotl, we have made the following anthology based mainly on the editions and translations of Ángel María Garibay and taking into account the enormous work of Miguel León-Portilla.
