The Cartas a María Mantilla (Letters to María Mantilla) is a moving series of epistles written by José Martí to the daughter of the owners of a pension in New York in which the Cuban independence leader stayed. They are a text of reference in the literature of Cuba of the 19th century. María was the daughter of Carmen Miyares de Mantilla and her husband Manuel Mantilla Sorzano. Although many claim that she was actually José Martí’s daughter.
