Gypsy Ballads

In Romancero gitano (Gypsy Ballads) García Lorca universalizes the essence of the gypsy people from the archetypes of their feelings and their laments, including the topic of their persecution by the everlasting civil guards. These are poems that are almost theatrical or narrative at times, with short verses of powerful poetic imagery that sometimes convey a sense of disquieting mystery and, in general, a darkly tragic sense of existence, both in the sense of the individual and in the collective , that is, that of an oppressed people, here symbolized by the gypsies.
The Gypsy Ballads belongs to his famous poem «The unfaithful married woman», which opens like this:
«And that I took her to the river / believing that she was a little girl, / but she had a husband».
