General History of the Indies

Although Francisco López de Gomara never went to America, he did receive direct testimonials from Cortés and other famous explorers. With this information he wrote Historia General de las Indias (General History of the Indies), a widely read work at the time. The text provides a detailed succession of events, written with elegance and loaded with quotations from the classics. With regard to the natives, he takes the view of an officer.
