Among the topics initially leveled against Don Segundo Sombra is its popular character, respect for the speech and customs of the gauchos. However, from the very beginning of this work by Ricardo Güiraldes it is perceived that we are not facing a localist portrait or a naive exaltation of a social type. The story is modern because of its construction and rhythm, its treatment of the characters, the juxtaposition of the scenes and its description of the political «epic». The characters seem strangely involved in the conflicts of their time and at the same time distant, obeying inner impulses that contrast with reality in the background.
