Noche oscura; Cántico espiritual; Llama de amor viva y otros poemas (Dark night; Spiritual canticle; Flame of living love and other poems) brings together the three main works of the mystic poet San Juan de la Cruz, to which many other poets – from Rubén Darío or Juan Ramón Jiménez, to Paul Valéry or TS Eliot – have considered not only the summit of Spanish mysticism but also of poetry in our language. Passionate and thrilling, able to move the most cultured readers and the most profane, San Juan de la Cruz harmonizes in his poems the verbal perfection and the emotion-laden expression, inspired both by his deep religious feeling, and in his knowledge of the Bible -and in particular of the Song of Songs-, of the Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy, and of the bucolic and pastoral style of the Eclogues by Garcilaso de la Vega. In addition to Spiritual Canticle, Dark Night and Flame of Living Love, the reader will find in this volume the five glosses of the poet (along with two attributed), his ten romances and one of his two songs.
