Cecilia Valdés, by Cirilo Villaverde, is the most important Cuban novel of the 19th century, a kind of tragedy of miscegenation essential in a reflection on the ethnic conflicts of the Cuban nation. It is also a story of seduction and how it is practiced in different cultures. The text is full of comments on the different social types and economic and religious orders of the time.
