Campaign Diary

Diario de Campaña (Campaign Diary) of José Martí’s campaign is a succession of fleeting notes written in Cuba during the War of Independence. Here the reflections on the destiny of a nation are mixed with the descriptions of the landscape, of the meals or the characters that surround its author. Although it seems strange, sometimes the sentences juxtapose the elements in an almost cinematic way and give Martí’s prose a tone close to that of the avant-garde writers of the early twentieth century. Sometimes the Campaign Diary remembers even Wittgenstein’s diaries during the First World War. The book ends with the imminent death of José Martí in Dos Ríos.
