Birds without a Nest

Aves sin nido (Birds without a Nest) is the most outstanding example of the author’s talent. It is recognized as the precursor of indigenous studies literature and a major piece in the Peruvian literary movement. The story has philanthropic ideas and a sentimental attitude towards the indigenous people. Details of mistreatment and the incompetence of officials expose the corruption of political and religious leaders, while not distracting from the narrative arc of the story.
Clorinda Matto de Turner studied at the College of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes of Cuzco. After marrying, she continued her young literary career, writing poems and articles under various pseudonyms before working as a journalist for El Heraldo, El Mercurio, El Ferrocarril, and El Eco de Los Andes. Her novel, Aves sin nido, was a forerunner of indigenous studies literature.
