Casa Grande. Escenas de la Vida en Chile achieved unprecedented popularity when it debuted in 1908, and with its success came controversy, as many characters resembled members of the Chilean oligarchy. The author denied his accusors, claiming that he only used a setting involving the wealthy as a means of best expressing his point regarding society and its tensions.

Luis Orrego Luco was a politician, lawyer, novelist, and Chilean diplomat. Despite having chosen a degree in law, Luis Orrego Luco mainly devoted his time to writing. In 1884 he won a literary prize in a contest at the University of Chile. As a journalist, he worked for La Libertad Electoral, La Mañana y El Mercurio de Santiago, and also founded the literary magazine Selecta.
