Anthology of Jarchas

This Antología de Jarchas (Anthology of Jarchas) contains the set of jarchas currently known. The word Jarcha means «exit» in Arabic. The jarchas are short romance texts (in aljamiada writing) antecedents of the «carols», the songs and songs. They go to the end of poems in Arabic or Hebrew called moaxajas. This genre appeared in Andalusia at the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th and the tradition attributed to Muqadamm ben Musafa de Cabra its invention.
Throughout history have been compiled just a few dozen jarchas that are distinguished by three fundamental characteristics:
1 monorrima;
2 uniformity (they are not divisible in stanzas), and
3 marked Arab influence.
Sometimes the anticipated breath of Spanish mystic poetry and some undifferentiated treatment for the sexual identity and the age of the lovers are glimpsed in them.

The discovery and translation of the texts that make up this Anthology of Jarchas is due to the work of the Arabists: Samuel Miklos Stern and Emilio García Gómez.
