Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, was born between 1648 and 1651 in Mexico, known at the time as New Spain. He died on April 17, 1695 of typhus.
A lover of her freedom and study, and without inclination towards marriage, in 1667 she entered a convent of the Discalced Carmelites of Mexico. She soon abandoned him due to health problems. She finally entered a convent of the Order of St. Jerome, where she lived for the rest of her life.
In this order Sor Juana had the possibility to continue her studies. He did scientific research, wrote various texts, composed songs, plays, received visits from friends and had gatherings with other intellectuals and poets, among other various activities. In his cell, he even created an important library.
Octavio Paz affirmed that Sor Juana Inés became a nun in order to think. And, considering the words Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, it may be true.

“Living alone… not to have any obligatory occupation that would embarrass the freedom of my study, nor a rumor of community that would prevent the quiet silence of my books.”
