Works by Manuel Díaz Rodríguez

The narrative of the Venezuelan Manuel Díaz Rodríguez (1868-1927) constitutes one of the moments of greatest vigor and robustness in Latin American literature. Although he did not cultivate lyrics, Díaz Rodríguez was among the most militant modernists in Venezuela.
His first books Confidencias de Psiquis (Caracas, 1896) and Sensaciones de viaje (Paris, 1896) which includes the article «Around Naples», previously published in El Cojo Ilustrado, in which his modernist distancing is manifested, De mis romerías (Caracas, 1898), Cuentos de color (Caracas, 1899), are essentially literary books. With no other message attempt than that of the artist’s dazzle before Europe, mainly before Paris and the Italian landscape.
The books he publishes afterwards correspond to the period of his life when he began to participate actively in the political life of his country.
His travel books, the conflict of development embodied in his novels, his marked preciousness and styling, the deep psychologism of his narrative, inject into the Venezuelan literature of his time an air of validity and universality at a time when it was still circumscribed to the costumbrista movement.
