Fray Juan de Santa Gertrudis (Mallorca, 1724-1799), is the author of Wonders of Nature.
In 1757 he went to South America as a Franciscan missionary and between 1758 and 1767 founded a village in the territory of Putumayo called Agustinillo. Juan de Santa Gertrudis then traveled through the southern territories of New Granada, the province of Popayán, Quito and Santa Fe de Bogotá.
After his American experience, Fray Juan de Santa Gertrudis wrote in Spain the Wonders of Nature. His work shows a vision of the life of New Granada of the eighteenth century very different from that offered by official documents or chronicles of conquest.
This edition includes a prologue by Jesús García Pastor.

In this First Volume I offer you (dear reader) a simple account of the first part of my pilgrimage, and journey to West India, which they vulgarly call: Peru, and is the greater part of what has been discovered of America. In the Second Volume I will give news of the New Kingdom of Granada, of the Kingdom of Quito, to Lima, and the Province of Cauja, wanting God. I warn you that in both volumes you will find no criticism but a simple relationship. And even for that I have been quite repugnant in writing it. And reason is the emblem with which I encrypt the picture of the Scales, as true as inspired by the Holy Spirit. I know that those who come from India are vulgarly considered liars in Europe because of the strange things they tell about those parts. And I say that they are partly right to call them liars; not because they tell strange things over there; but because they tell what they have not seen. It is the case that from one to another the news is corrupted in such a way that not even sketches are of the truth of what in itself is the one that is intended to tell by rare wonder. I have experienced this in practice many times, having told some singular things, after some time, to hear the species, already covered in so many different colors, that what is told is a mess of lies. And this is where it is verified that the scales with which men weigh, make false weight. Another reason was: to have seen there such unique things, that to those who have not seen it, it is incredible, which you will find some of these in this volume, and others that I will say in the second volume.
