In Winning Friends a man must avenge the death of his brother and the dishonor of his family, but at the same time fights against his feelings. The argument alludes to the justice and Castilian honor of the times of King Pedro I the Cruel.
Juan Ruiz de Alarcón makes here an apology for friendship, a feeling that, together with reciprocated love, is a key part of his dramatic work. This play shows the drama of renouncing love to ensure friendship, society and the interests of the kingdom.
In Winning Friends the redemption of the social order is achieved through a pact of friendship. Here stands out the treatment of the theme of nobility, moral code and convictions quite accepted at the time. Ruiz Alarcón treats him with passionate interest. At the same time he attacks the ambition and lack of scruples shown by men of the powerful, obsessed with prevailing at any cost.
Winning Friends was written in 1617 and performed in October 1621 before Queen Isabella of Bourbon, wife of Philip IV.
This work is also known with the titles of Lo que mucho vale mucho cuesta and Quien priva asesore bien, as a result of the fact that its different publishers of the time published it under those names.
