In Quien mal anda en mal acaba Juan Ruiz de Alarcón tells the story of the Moorish Román Ramírez, who was imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition and subjected to a very long trial. Eugenio Hartzenbusch when editing the complete works of Ruiz de Alarcón in 1852, established the best version of this text.
Who Goes Wrong Ends Badly it does not appear in the two parts of Alarcón’s works published between 1628 and 1624. And the first public by the Sevillian printer Francisco de Leefdael, in the mid-eighteenth century. It was also highly praised in the nineteenth century by Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch and Agustín Millares.
For his part, Antonio Castro Leal considers that Quien mal anda en mal acaba was written between 1601 and 1603.
Ruiz de Alarcón uses in this piece unusual resources in Spanish Baroque theater, such as the high percentage of redondillas, used only by Guillén de Castro.
It also highlights the good structure of comedy, the handling of the dramatic sense and the use of poetry. Agustín Millares, a great connoisseur of Alarcon’s work, considers it, without a doubt, “a comedy of collaboration”, although the rest of the critics consider it, without hesitation, the unique and exclusive fruit of Juan Ruiz de Alarcón.
