Vergara is the seventh novel in the third series of the National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós.
The first Carlist war is apparently entrenched. But the reality is that the dissensions in the Carlist camp are undermining the strength of the doubting General Maroto, which is taken advantage of by General Baldomero Espartero, who will send our hero, Don Fernando Calpena, to negotiate a peace that does not leave his opponent in a very bad place. His good arts for intermediation will lead him, conveniently disguised, to enter Carlist territory with the idea of checking the availability of the Carlist leaders to a possible negotiated end of the conflict. The truth is that at that stage of the war, the facts showed that the Carlist side was going to have a very difficult time winning. And more so in the case of the northern part of the factional territory, totally surrounded by the Christian troops. Vergara was the town of Gipuzkoa that saw its name forever linked to the agreement between Generals Espartero and Rafael Maroto, which ended in 1839 the six bloody years during which the first Carlist War passed.
On the other hand, our protagonist has an encounter with Zoilo Arratia, Aura’s husband and rival in love for her, with whom he will end up striking up a friendship that will lead him in search of his former lover.
