Historical Studies: Venezuelan Origins is the first volume of a series of three books commissioned by the government of Raimundo Andueza Palacios in 1890. It was written by Arístides Rojas with the purpose of being published in preparation for the Centennial of the Independence of Venezuela.
In this book, Rojas brings together his historical research based on documents to offer a better understanding of Venezuela’s past and present. In his rigorous methodology, Rojas analyzes the most outstanding moments and characters of Venezuelan history, as well as the representative customs of each era.
The first volume is divided into three parts:

  • The first includes a dedication, an introduction and a chronicle of Venezuela from 1498 to 1831.
  • The second part, entitled “Rojas Collection”, is composed of historical documents found by the author. These documents cover a wide range of topics, such as Christopher Columbus’ letter to the Catholic Monarchs on his third voyage, documents related to Venezuela’s independence, education and the creation of the National Library, among others.
  • The third part is an analytical index.

Historical Studies: Venezuelan Origins is an important work for understanding the history of Venezuela and has been valued for its scientific and critical approach to the country’s past.
