The Duke of Rivas was ambassador to Naples. During his stay he wrote Journey to Vesuvius, among other books about Italy.

Since my arrival in Naples, the object that has most occupied my imagination has been Vesuvius, this superb giant that stands isolated and alone in the middle of the most beautiful and peaceful plain in the world, overlooking the most laughable gulf of the Mediterranean, which is surrounded at a respectful distance by high mountains covered with population and trees, and who looks at his feet, more as a tyrant than as a protector, one of the first and richest capitals of Europe, considerable and smiling towns and beautiful estates, which sleep peacefully on other famous cities and peaceful gardens that the volcano has devoured. Thus, children play, cross, rest and sleep among the trees and flowers of the cemetery where their grandparents lie, without even remembering their names and without thinking that the same fate awaits them.
How gallant rises Mount Vesuvius, offering from afar to the astonished traveler its daring contours, which stand out against a peaceful sky and enclose the figure of a wide almost regular cone, since it is separated from the mountain of Somma, to whom it is united by the base and with which it is believed that in very remote times it formed a single body… The fertile and smiling of her skirt, where a perpetual spring reigns; the abundant and lush vegetation of its steep hills; its high summit covered with slag and ashes, which bathe in the afternoon of a most peaceful color of purple, and the plume of smoke, already whitish, already blackish, already golden by the rays of the sun, which crowns its forehead, form a whole so great and so magnificent, that seen once it is never forgotten, Because nothing can erase it from fantasy.
