Trip to the Ruins of Pesto. Ángel Saavedra. Duque de Rivas

At nine o’clock on a beautiful morning in May, when a transparent sky tempered the burning of the sun, refreshing the atmosphere the light breeze of the sea, we left Naples by the iron road recently established, which leads to Nocera. The convoy slipped quickly, and was leaving behind the magnificent capital and its busy port, where part of the beautiful Neapolitan squadron with a large number of war steamers is located, and where so many merchant ships from different nations are gathered.
Following the beach, we passed. by Portici, under whose houses lies wrapped in the lava of Vesuvius the ancient Herculaneum; by the Torre del Greco, a village founded on two others, victims of the eruptions of the volcano, and by the Torre de la Anunciata, where leaving the bank we enter inland near Pompeii, and through a delicious field, cultivated with care. Its ferocious production and its vineyards forming pavilions, festoons and garlands, linked with the pompous and corpulent trees, of which the plain is sown, form a rich and smiling landscape, of which is last, on the left, the majestic Vesuvius, with its emerald slopes and its whitish plume of smoke and ash, and in front and on the right, High mountains covered with groves and country houses.
