The Treaty of the superstitions and gentylic customs that today live among the natural Indians of this New Spain contains the notes of an impressive journey through northern Mexico in the sixteenth century, in which Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón, brother of the playwright Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, approaches the native customs.
To write his book, Alarcón traveled the Gulf of California and reached the Colorado River. He had contact with the aborigines of the area and compiled abundant information about their warlike, religious and even sexual practices and customs that appeared in the Treaty, published in 1629.
The purpose of the treaty was rather to fight as a faithful guardian of the Catholic faith and morals, rather than cataloguing and knowing the customs, idolatries and superstitions that were practiced in the territory of New Spain and that subsisted outside the evangelizing work of the monks.

“My intention with this work, is not to make an exquisite investigation of the customs of the natives of this Earth, which required a very long work and many divisions: and I do not know why such work was profitable today. I only intend to open the way to the ministers of the Indians, so that both jurisdictions can easily come to know this corruption so that they can better deal with its correction if not the remedy.”
