España trágica is the second novel in the fifth and final series of the National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós.
The tragic Spain of this episode, turbulent and aimless, is the one that follows the Revolution of 1868 and the exile of Isabel II. The death in duel of the infante Don Enrique de Borbón at the hands of the Duke of Montpensier and the mysterious murder of General Prim are the events around which the novelesque action of this episode is woven, which takes place in the Madrid scenarios so common in the novelist.
The first event took place in Madrid, on March 12, 1870. The duel ended with the death by shot of Don Enrique, but also with the possibilities of the Duke of Montepensier to seize the Spanish throne, to which he aspired after the overthrow of his sister-in-law Isabel. The second fact was the assassination of General Juan Prim, who died on December 30, 1870, apparently because of infected wounds caused by an attack he suffered three days earlier, in a conspiracy perfectly organized and financed by the Duke of Montpensier, Antonio de Orleans.
