Trafalgar is the first novel of the first series of the National Episodes of Benito Pérez Galdós.
Gabriel de Araceli, the central character of this work, introduces himself to the reader. Born in Cádiz and son of a poor widow who was dedicated to washing clothes for sailors, he did not know his father. His childhood was spent on the street, serving as a guide for the English who arrived at the dock of the Andalusian capital.
By vicissitudes of life, he will end up aboard the Holy Trinity. It is the largest ship of the time, symbol of the Spanish navy that had four bridges. From that place, the narrator will offer us a complete vision of the battle of Trafalgar and its background. Meanwhile, Gabriel witnesses multiple conversations about what happened on the various fronts of the battle.
This novel by Benito Pérez Galdós transports us to Trafalgar. It also gives us a global vision of the daily life of the early nineteenth century and its customs. It also introduces us to the main protagonists of the battle, both Spanish and French and English. Along with the historical story, the protagonist Gabriel de Araceli will tell us anecdotes of his daily and loving life.
