The comedy El celoso prudente by Tirso de Molina was one of the three plays included in Los cigarrales de Toledo, published, according to the first known edition, in 1624. However, the preliminaries allude to an earlier edition, dated 1621. It is the one that most critics accept as the probable date of composition of this work.
Tirso de Molina is the author of two miscellaneous collections corresponding to two very different moments of his life:

  • The Cigarrales of Toledo (1624)
  • and Delight taking advantage (1632).

Two titles composed, in turn, by short stories and threaded by an inconsequential fact: the narration of a story to pass the time.
The first, where The Zealous Prudent appears , is the work of youth, the most intense period of the author’s dramatic activity. The book is inspired by the novelesque arrangement of the Decameron. That book was the great model of Western Europe in the way of weaving the narratives and in the very invoice of the stories.
All the stories are thematically subordinated to an initial or unifying theme: some friends who walk through the cigarrales, where they have gone to celebrate weddings and escape the Toledo heat. The characters tell stories, and recite poems. Among the first novels or narratives collected in the Cigarrales stand out

  • The Three Mocked Husbands and Comedies
  • The shameful in the palace
  • and The Prudent Jealous.

Tirso de Molina’s play The Zealous Prudent takes place in Prague. The story recounts the anguish of Prince Sigismund, in love with a lady named Lisena. However, his father, the King of Bohemia, wants to marry him to Leonora, Princess of Hungary.
As usual in comedies of entanglement, Leonora in turn is in love with another character, the infant Alberto. This complicates the story to unsuspected levels. The Zealous Prudent is a work written in seventeenth-century Spain. It reflects a loving ideal typical of the Baroque. It is articulated around the tricks that lovers invent to face the tyranny of their parents.
