The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda tells a story of love and adventure between two Norse princes who make a pilgrimage to Rome with the desire to purify their spirits before marrying.
This is the last work of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Its dedication to the Count of Lemos is dated April 19, 1616, just four days before Cervantes’ death:

“Yesterday I was given extreme unction and today I write this. Time is short, cravings grow, hopes wane and, with all this, I lead life on the desire I have to live. And I would like to stop it to kissing the feet of Your Excellency, good in Spain, that he would give me life again. But if it is decreed that you will lose it, let the will of heaven be fulfilled, and at least let Your Excellency know this my desire, and know that you had in me such an amateur servant to serve you that you wanted to pass even beyond death by showing your intention.”

The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda is a Byzantine novel, considered, at the end of his days, by Cervantes his best work. With it the author wanted to give culmination to his work, considering it even superior to Don Quixote.

Voices gave the barbarian Corsicurbo to the narrow mouth of a deep dungeon, before burial that prison of many living bodies that were buried in it; and, though his terrible and frightful roar near and far was heard, the reasons he uttered were not understood articulately from anyone, but from the wretched Cloelia, whom his misadventures in that depth had shut up.
“Do it, O Cloelia! —said the barbarian—, that as he is, his hands tied behind, go up here, tied to that rope that I pick up, that mancebo that there will be two days that we deliver to you; And see well if, among the women of the last dam, there is one who deserves our company and enjoy the light of the clear sky that covers us and the healthy air that surrounds us.
