The Dream of the Warrior is a story about the vicissitudes of the Cuban War of Independence, written by Máximo Gómez, one of its main protagonists.
The literary work of Máximo Gómez remains unknown to most, since his military facet has been the most popular. His literary career, uneven and extensive, fruit of the work of several decades and ardent vocation. He wrote a campaign diary, several hundred letters, proclamations, speeches, articles, stories and the outline of several plays.
Máximo Gómez was a military leader of the Cuban independence movement. Destined for an ecclesiastical career, Gómez exchanged the cassock for weapons when the invasion of Santo Domingo by Haiti took place in 1855.
In 1865 he went to Cuba and joined the nationalist movement against Spanish colonial domination. When the first war for Cuban independence broke out, the Ten Years’ War (1868-78), Gómez fought alongside Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. He rose to obtain the command of the forces of the province of Oriente, thanks to his military experience.
During the Cuban Wars of Independence, Máximo Gómez was the undisputed general in chief of the liberation army (“the generalissimo”, as they called him), and showed his great military skills.
