The Book of Hours of the Duke of Berry, or The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry, began to be produced at the end of 1404. That year the Limbourg brothers: Herman, Paul, and Johan began working with John I of Berry, who collected works of art and books. The first commission was to illuminate the Book of Hours, today known as Belles Heures du Duc de Berry.
The work was begun by Jean Noir, Pucelle’s disciple, between 1372 and 1375; it was continued by Jacquemart de Hesdin and finished by the Limbourg brothers. Today it is preserved in The Cloisters of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
It was completed in 1409 to the satisfaction of the Duke, who commissioned a more ambitious project: The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry (Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry). This other book is kept at the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France. It is considered the last great medieval illumination and one of the most valuable books in history.
In the first half of 1416, Jean de Berry and the three Limbourg brothers (all three under thirty) died of unknown causes and The Duke of Berry’s Book of Hours remained unfinished.
An unidentified artist (perhaps Barthélemy van Eyck) worked on the book in the 1440s. At that time it was in the hands of René I of Naples, and in 1485 Jean Colombe finished the work for the House of Savoy.
The dimensions of the book are (294×210 mm). Contains

  • 131 miniatures,
  • 300 golden capital letters
  • and 1800 gilded moldings.
