The Unzúazu Family is, along with Sofía, part of the series of novels that Martín Morúa wanted to present as social pictures of Cuban life. According to his own words the series entitled Things of my land ‘It will be closely intertwined; But this, with respect to one volume to another, will not mean continuation by necessity. Each volume will be a complete novel, independent of each work, without prejudice, however, that the characters pending solution in one, happen to develop in another, and even those of relative importance in the previous one, become the most salient characters of the immediate composition.
In The Unzúazu Family, Liberato, a slave, and his owner stir social relations in a violent and ecstatic scene:

«A movement that Ana María now made discovered him, the white stocking fell to the ankle, the naked and turned birth of the leg.
Liberato felt like a vaporous cloud blinding him. Not in the mood to resist the propulsive force that impelled him, he extended his arm gently touching those tempting meats… And this was already more than measured. Extremecióle a piercing heat that bristled all his body, to the contact of the silky and warm skin of his mistress, and more alienated than conscious of his acts, he fell inflamed on the revered beauty, and clasping it convulsively between his arms satiated with fierceness the unsuspected brutal appetite, which so suddenly and bestially manifested itself. The frenzy of the barbarian met with no opposition on the part of the victim, and this must have excited his clumsy sensualism, until, finally surrendered in his madness, breathless he was as if melted on the small carpet and embraced the body of his mistress.”

And this climax has as a background the Cuba of the nineteenth century and the environment of the ñáñigos, African freedmen who practiced an ethical code based on ancestral rites.
