The Unfortunate in Pretending (El desdichado en fingir) has many common themes with The Suspicious Truth, Juan Ruiz de Alarcón’s masterpiece. The two comedies deal with the theme of the liar who hatches lies to achieve his mission. Thus, as punishment for their lies, the gallant protagonists of these works lose the women they love and for whom they have fought so much.
Even so, the psychological structure of the main characters of the two works is different in many respects.
This work recounts a man’s struggle against his own destiny, in which his only weapons are perseverance, courage and will, although his ironic point of view makes it difficult to appreciate these traits. At the beginning of the piece, Arsenio, the heartthrob from The Unfortunate in Pretending, seems to be an upright man, patient in the face of adversity, unable to pretend. Then the plot uncovers his many deceptions.
