In Las dos doncellas Miguel de Cervantes narrates a series of loves and adventures.
The plot describes a game of disguises and coincidences, deception and reparations between people of the nobility. The deceptions of the maidens Theodosia and Leocadia compose an intrigue with pastoral themes and techniques of the Byzantine novel. They, disguised as men (a resource widely used in novels and theater of the time), go after their loves until they get married to them.

Five leagues from the city of Seville is a place called Castilblanco, and in one of many inns it has, at dusk, a walker entered a beautiful foreign quarter. He had no servant, and without waiting for them to have the stirrup, he threw himself from the chair with great lightness. Then came the guest (who was a diligent man, and errand) but it was not so quick that the walker was not already sitting on a pole that was in the portal, unfastening the buttons of the chest very quickly, and then he dropped his arms to one side and to the other giving manifest indication of fainting. The guest, who was charitable, came to him and sprinkling water on his face made him return in his agreement; and he, showing that he had been sorry that they had seen him, buckled again, asking that they then give him a room where he would be collected; and that if possible, it would be alone. The guest told him that there was not more than one in the whole house and that he had two beds, and that it was obliged, if any guest came, to accommodate him in the one. To which the wayfarer replied that he would pay for the two beds, whether or not any guest came. And taking out a shield of gold was given to the guest, on condition that no one should give the empty bed. The guest was not dissatisfied with the payment, before she offered to do what she asked even if the Dean of Seville himself arrived that night at his house. He asked him if he wanted to have dinner and he said no, but he just wanted great care to be taken with his quarters. He asked for the key to the chamber, and carrying with him some large leather bags he entered it and locked the door behind him, and even (to what it later appeared) brought two chairs to it.
