La prueba (1890) by Emilia Pardo Bazán is a continuation of Una cristiana (1890). Here the history of his characters is framed in the typical spaces of his creative work: Madrid.
The two novels are another example of how our author uses her pen in the description of fundamental Madrid environments to approach the Madrid of the time. It reflects the physical spaces of the city but also its inhabitants. Although in these novels the author focuses on the analysis of the middle classes.
In The Test , the narrator’s voice is identified with that of its protagonist. Sallust is a student in nineteenth-century Spain, madly in love with Carmen, his uncle’s wife, with whom he lives.
In The Test Pardo Bazán leaves aside his naturalistic fabulation to evolve towards greater symbolism and spiritualism.

I do not know if I have said in the first part of these true notes that Luis Portal, my sensible, cuckoo and opportunistic fellow student, was quite ugly and ungainly, which probably greatly influenced his way of understanding life and his intransigence towards dreams, illusions, poetry, passion and other beautiful things that give interest to our existence. Portal had a square and massive body; wide and badly placed hands; the short leg; the head well developed, but round like a balcony knob; the neck without gallantry, and the shoulders high; the features too large for his stature, of which resulted a facies not vulgar, but figurehead; a carofla, as they called him to make him angry, when he was a boy, his classmates at the Institute of Orense. Portal’s clear understanding induced him to suffer with laughing cachaça the jokes concerning his physique; But the self-love inherent in human nature must sometimes have made him feel his sting, and he revealed it, unintentionally, in a certain affected contempt for male beauty, and in the barbs he released to us companions whom he thought best treated by nature.
