In The Tableau of Wonders (El retablo de las maravillas) Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra uses an argument from Calila e Dimna also cited in the Book of Examples of Count Lucanor by Don Juan Manuel.
In this play, some rogues (Chanfalla and his partner Chirinos) arrive in a town to perform an unusual function.
In the altarpiece, puppets tell a story that only authentic Christians, without Muslim or Jewish ancestry and not bastard children, can see.
At this point a hilarious scene takes place. Chanfalla describes the wonders that appear in the altarpiece (Samson, a bull, mice, lions and even beeting bears) and, in reality, nothing is happening.
There is only an empty wooden box, an expectant audience and a narrator making up a story. However, those present pretend and claim to be seeing the great wonders they are told. They fear being considered illegitimate children or Jewish converts.
The Tableau of Wonders ends with the arrival of a soldier who demands accommodation for his exhausted soldiers. Knowing nothing of the supposed power of the altarpiece, he does not mind saying that he sees nothing. At this the scammers begin to mock him.
