The Suspicious Truth is the best known work of Juan Ruiz de Alarcón who wrote it between 1618 and 1621, dedicated to King Philip III. According to Pedro Henríquez Ureña it was performed for the first time in 1624. The definitive version appeared in the second part of the comedies of Alarcón, in 1634.
The play is set in Salamanca and Madrid, where the liar Don García meets Jacinta and Lucrecia. Don García falls in love with Jacinta and to seduce her invents a plot of lies that give order to the story. In the end, don García recognizes his mistakes and receives an exemplary punishment.
In The Suspicious Truth it is a comedy of characters rather than a comedy of entanglements. The plot aims to ridicule the figure of the liar Don Garcia, center of all vices. For some he suffers from melancholy, caused by his infatuation; And for others he shows a rage, which leads him to imagine excessively.
