In The Suppression of the African Slave Trade on the Island of Cuba, José Antonio Saco proposes to prohibit the entry of blacks into Cuba. Written in 1844 and published in Paris, this essay offers two main arguments for the abolition of slavery on the island:

  • White people can survive on equal terms in the Caribbean and it is necessary to encourage their entry into Cuba.
  • The African population poses an innate danger to social peace and the survival of the white race.

This is stated by the author:

“These simple considerations tell us how violent and dangerous is the state of a people in which live two numerous races, no less different in their color than in their condition, with essentially opposing interests, and therefore irreconcilable enemies. And when, in order to ward off the conflict, which at all hours threatens them, the most constant effort should have been made to give a vigorous impulse to the white population, does our delirium reach the point of keeping our bosom open to receive in it the harpies that could later tear it apart?”

The suppression of the slave trade is not only a testimony to Cuban anti-slavery thinking. It is also a compendium of figures and analysis that offers much documentation on the formation of Cuba’s ethnicity.
Here José Antonio Saco analyzes with abundant data: economic indices and percentages of population divided by races obtained from the censuses that until then were made in Cuba.
