The second jacket

La segunda casaca is the third novel in the second series of the National Episodes of Benito Pérez Galdós.
Galdós portrays with great precision in this national episode one of the oldest political vices, the transfuguismo or what is commonly called “changing jackets”. Juan de Pipaón, protagonist of the previous episode, continues to narrate his adventures, begun in the previous story Memoirs of a courtier of 1815. Reading their fictitious memories, we are first-rate spectators of the machinations with which they took off and put advisors, ministers and any position of the state. For his part, Salvador Monsalud, also protagonist of this second series of Galdós’ episodes, has returned to Spain and introduces himself to his old friend Pipaón, to whom he requests his mediation to free his elderly mother, who is imprisoned and is being tortured by the Inquisition in Logroño.
