Life and facts of Periquillo Sarniento written by him and his children was the original name of the novel when it was published in 1816 in a three-volume version, written by José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi. There is a fourth volume that was censored for criticizing slavery. They were not published in full under the title El periquillo Sarniento until 1830, when Lizardi died. The protagonist goes from a tragic experience, when he is still a young rogue, to an epic adventure, all seasoned with a narrative full of ironies, criticisms or reflections on the uses and customs of the society of that time. All of which takes place at the end of the Spanish domination in Mexico.
