Considered the founder of the Puerto Rican novel, Manuel Zeno Gandía is one of the most outstanding writers of the naturalist tendency. His best known work is La charca ( 1894), which depicts poverty, vice and pain. Another of his novels is Redentores. Zeno also wrote short stories, poetry, literary criticism and essays.
The description of the environment occupies a primordial place in all of Zeno’s novels. This novel takes place in a space that is dominated by negative forces of different nature. There move a series of positive characters that end up being defeated by the implacable and fatal power of the environment.
In La charca, the plot is set in a rural environment, which Zeno describes as a space dominated by ignorance. In which human relationships are marked by the most elementary instincts. The road leading to the village of La Charca is described as follows
“more suitable for goats and wildcats than for human beings”.
This novel is a splendid X-ray of the misery that surrounds the day laborers. It is also a firm denunciation of the worst social vices (such as usury) and a criticism of the consciences of the enlightened. La charca portrays this social class and shows them incapable of putting into practice the social changes that, in theory, they defend.
