The Nao Santa María was built by order of the Ministry of the Navy of Spain, in 1892. It was part of the commemoration of the fourth centenary of the discovery of the American continent.
Counting on the studies of the historian and captain, Cesáreo Fernández Duro, and based on the plans of the work of Rafael Monleón, Naval Architecture, the nao Santa María was rebuilt to star in this naval festival, held in La Rábida in July 1892.
Cesáreo Fernández Duro directed the archaeological studies that allowed him to reconstruct the historic nave. In this edition we find perfectly described the complexity of the project. The navigation instruments, the way of life of the crew, the characteristics of the ship and other issues of interest are described.
The nao Santa María was the only nao and the largest of the three vessels used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the New World. She was one of the first three ships to cross the Atlantic Ocean and partially verify the roundness of the earth. The other ships of the expedition were the caravels: La Niña and La Pinta.
