The Mount

The Mount of Lydia Cabrera is a masterpiece of ethnography, a kind of Bible of Afro-Cuban religions.
This book by Cabrera became a true best-seller of this type of studies, attracting specialists in the field, believers and the general public alike.
Its merit lies, according to its author, in that it is the same blacks of Cuba who made this book:

“It has been my purpose to offer specialists, in all modesty and the greatest fidelity, a material that has not passed through the dangerous filter of interpretation, and to confront them with the living documents that I have been fortunate enough to find.”

The definition of the mountain as a sacred space also alludes as an origin directly to the body and to a feminine knowledge:

“Begetter of life we are children of the mountain because life began there […] the mountain is equivalent to Earth in the concept of universal Mother, source of life, earth and mountain are the same.”

If the mountain is the beginning of the origin of the world, it is the feminine mountain, the origin of sexuality and life.

“The mountain is sacred because in it reside and ‘live’ divinities. The saints are more on the mountain than in heaven.”
