In La manganilla de Melilla Juan Ruiz de Alarcón recounts an episode that happened in the Spanish city of Melilla in the seventeenth century, known as the “Suceso del Morabito”. A Moorish leader convinced his own that he had supernatural powers to lull the Christian defenders of the place.
Alerted to those plans, the warden of the square, Pedro Venegas, ordered the opening of the gates of the city wall. The Spanish staged a daring ambush and seized the opportunity to defeat the Muslims.
Like The Cave of Salamanca, this work also alludes to magic and esotericism. Likewise, Captain Pedro Venegas, a brave and daring man, uses cunning to defeat the Muslims. Juan Ruiz de Alarcón resorted to these historical events to build one of his most successful dramas. Ruiz de Alarcón criticizes the lie.
In The Manganilla of Melilla, everyone lies to achieve their ends. Thus in this work Sergeant Pimienta also lies impelled by his desire to possess Darja and Alima, Moorish captives of the Christians and each of the sides is victim and executioner of their own lies.
