El caballero del azor by Juan Valera is a tale that takes place in a legendary time (medieval Spain). Here the author recreates events between myth and history.
Although The Knight of the Goshawk lacks magical elements. The origin of its sources (medieval romances) gives it a breath of magic and legend that brings it closer to fantastic tales.

Much more than a thousand years ago, there was in the most elusive and fragrant of the Pyrenees a splendid abbey of Benedictines. Abbot Eulogius was going through a prodigy of virtue and science.
Things in the world were very bad at that age. Tremendous barbarism had invaded almost all regions of Europe. Everywhere, fierce fighting, robbery and killing. Almost all of Spain was subject to the law of Muhammad, except for two or three nascent states, where, between breñas and cliffs, the Christians were sheltered.
In the midst of that deluge of evils, the abbey of which we speak could be compared to the holy ark in which knowledge and good customs were guarded and in which human culture could be saved from the universal ravage. The monks had great faith in their prayers and in the mercy of God, but they did not disdain worldly prudence. And in order to be able to defend themselves against the invasions of bandits, of powerful and heartless barons or of Muslim infidels, they had fortified the abbey as an almost impregnable rock castle, and kept at their service hundreds of men-at-arms of the most vigorous, tried and skilled for war.
