The Knight of Grace (El caballero de gracia) is a theatrical work written by Tirso de Molina, the pseudonym of the Mercedarian friar Gabriel Téllez, one of the great playwrights of Spain’s Golden Age.
Written under the impression of the death of Jacobo Gratti, an event that caused collective mourning in Madrid, it is Tirso de Molina’s contribution to the sentimental tribute that Madrid dedicated to one of its most popular figures.
Gratti was a very popular historical character in Madrid during the Golden Age. Of Italian origin, he settled in Madrid and gained fame as a preacher and confessor to the nobility. In the Plaza de Jesús de Medinaceli in Madrid, there is the Chapel of the Knight of Grace, built at the behest of Jacobo Gratti.

Day one

(The Knight of Grace and Lambert, his brother-in-law, come out.)

Lambert: Well, you have been in my charge,
your remedy is at my account,
And so I want to give you status.

Knight: If your love honors me try,
Barter the name of brother-in-law
in that of a gentle brother;
do not force my inclination,
see that it is a terrible thing,
knowing my condition,
Marry.

Lamberto: It’s already impossible
Get rid of this concert.

Knight: Don’t you see that my age has passed?
of the limits, Lambert,
who ask for weddings?
