In The Independents of Color. History of the Independent Party of Color, Serafín Portuondo Linares tells the story of the Black Rebellion, also called Armed Uprising of the Independents of color, Guerrita de las razas, or the War of 1912.
This was a military conflict that occurred in 1912 in Cuba. It confronted black rebels and the armies of Cuba and the United States. It took place, above all, in the east of the island. The action of the Cuban army, and the intervention of the American marines put an end to the rebellion in a matter of weeks.
Rebel leaders, Evaristo Estenoz and Pedro Ivonnet, were killed during the events. The final death toll of the conflict has been controversial. An estimated 3,000 to 6,000 rebels were killed. There were hardly any casualties among members of the Cuban Army and Marines.
The author of The Independents of Color. History of the Independent Party of Color, Serafín Portuondo Linares, was a descendant of one of the participants in the War of 1912. Linkgua editions also published Race war. Blacks vs. Whites in Cuba, another essay related to this episode in Cuban history. In the latter case, the actions of the Cuban Army in the events are defended.
