Written by Federico García Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba (La casa de Bernarda Alba) tells the life of a wealthy family in which their father has just died.
Acting as head of the family, Bernarda Alba will try to preserve her five daughters. He protects them from the men of the people, for he considers them unworthy of them. When Pepe el Romano, in fact the only male character, appears in the place, love expectations are generated between the three sisters.
Then, in an episode of jealousy, one of them, Martirio, betrays the relations of her sister Adela with the waiter. Bernarda will chase him away with a shotgun blast and make her daughter Adela believe that she has killed him. Adela will commit suicide because of it. Bernarda, dominated by the fear of “what they will say”, will only worry that the official version highlights that her daughter died a virgin.
Written in his last months of life, Lorca turned into this play many of his recurring themes. Here we talk about honor, death or family. Lorca thus creates a timeless masterpiece that tells us about the deep Spain of the early twentieth century.
The center of the plot is a peculiar family. That of Bernarda Alba, a woman of strong and tyrannical character who, by locking up her five daughters, castrates their freedoms and their youth.
Lorca could not see represented The House of Bernarda Alba. The play was not premiered or published until 1945, in Buenos Aires, thanks to the initiative of the actress Margarita Xirgu.
Federico García Lorca (1898-1936, Spain) was one of the most outstanding poets and playwrights of the twentieth century.
At the age of thirty-eight, during the Spanish Civil War, he was shot by the coup side of General Franco. Among his work, it is worth mentioning the poetry books Poema del cante jondo, Romancero gitano and Poeta en Nueva York; and the plays Mariana Pineda, Bodas de sangre, Yerma, Doña Rosita la soltera or La casa de Bernarda Alba.
