Miguel del Carrión makes an acute psychological analysis of the female condition in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Cuba. Particularly in the novels Las honradas (1917) and Las impuras (1919).
Victoria is the protagonist of the novel Las honradas. Daughter of a landowner who grew sugar cane, she emigrated with her family to Havana before the beginning of the War of Independence. From there he moved to New York to study at a religious school. His education is extremely conservative. First because of the school influence and then because of the prejudices that prevail in the wealthy classes.
After living in New York, a city that was already very liberal, she became aware of equality between women and men in all aspects. Victoria, now married, meets a wealthy man with whom she falls in love. However, far from helping Victoria realize herself, it makes her an even more miserable woman.
Victoria narrates in first person the story of how she accessed the knowledge of sexuality in its marital dimension and as a free woman. Carrión bravely portrays the enormous influence of sexual inhibition on our behavior.

“Victoria, the heroine of Las honradas, is a Cuban Madame Bovary. Educated with all the rigor of the Spanish style at the end of the Colony, in avoidance of all strange contact, she receives her primary knowledge without leaving the enclosure of her house, in the provincial peace of Santa Clara. Then he studied for a few years at an American school, where he glimpsed another kind of life. After the war of independence, his father, a former attorney and landowner from Villa Clara, settled in the capital, where a stroke of fortune placed him in an important administrative position. Such is the social environment and urban setting in which the young woman reaches the age of a nubile woman, but she turns out to be a misfit.”
