The Hercules. Ángel Saavedra. Duque de Rivas

The Hercules
Within the walls of Seville, and in the middle of one of its neighborhoods, three wide, long and parallel streets of gigantic and ancient trees, in front of which runs on one side and the other a stone seat, form the ancient, magnificent and almost forgotten promenade that is called the Alameda Vieja. Six marble fountains, small, but of graceful and simple taste, toast in it with the most delicious water of the city, and serves as entrance a monument of the ancient Hispalis and the Roman domination. It is made up of two gigantic ancient columns, vulgarly called the Hercules, composed of two canes or shafts, of a single piece of granite each, which, resting on Attic bases, also ancient, on modern pedestals of very good proportion, are crowned with two capitals of white marble, mutilated by the course of the centuries, of Corinthian order, and of great merit, on which stand: In one, the statue of Hercules; in the other, that of Julius Caesar. The height and gallantry of these columns, to which time has robbed part of its robustness, fleshing with unevenness its surface and giving them more thinness and slenderness; the majesty with which they stand out on the gigantic trees and on the buildings of the round; the grace and novelty with which they draw their lower part on masses of greenery and branches, and the upper, on the pure blue of the Andalusian sky; the vague of their contours, and the indecisive and mysterious color of age, gives them a fantastic and indefinable appearance, which causes a deep sensation in the eyes and heart of those who look at them and contemplate them. By the way, they do not have such virtue the two rickety sisters that the last century wanted to give them in the ridiculous little columns, of eight pieces each one, that in the opposite part of the Alameda, as if we would say to its exit, they were placed. What difference!…. Those are the shins of a Titan; these, a little toy of alcorza.
